How can CFD help achieve EEXI and CII compliance? Computational Fluid Dynamics, CFD can show exactly which energy-saving devices and improvements will work best together to achieve compliance with EEXI and CII regulations. The CFD image shows a non-ideal situation. The red, turbulent area means that the water does not flow smoothly towards the propeller. The water flow needs to be improved. This will increase efficiency and reduce the amount of power needed to move the vessel through the water. One way to achieve this is to install a pre-swirl stator on the vessel’s propeller. It will create an optimal inflow for the propeller by guiding one side of the stern flow in the opposite direction to the propeller rotation – generating a pre-swirl. For example, Wärtsilä’s EnergoFlow solution generates a pre-swirl with its multiple curved fins and a ring attached to the hull to prevent power losses from the propeller’s slipstream. A pre-swirl stator can improve propulsive efficiency by 2–7%. The emission savings help the vessel comply with regulations. With the fuel and emission savings, a stator can pay itself back in just one to two years. 🌊 #CFDmethodology #OptiDesign

#HotOffThePress - Wärtsilä will supply the methanol-fuelled auxiliary engines for five new container vessels for COSCO Shipping Lines Co., and seven new container vessels for Orient Overseas Container Line. Each vessel will operate with three 8-cylinder and two 6-cylinder Wärtsilä 32M engines, making it the Chinese maritime sector's largest order to date for methanol-fuelled newbuild vessels. “As a leader in shaping the decarbonisation of marine and energy industries, Wärtsilä continues to make strong investments in developing new fuel flexible technologies and products which enable the industry’s transition towards greener fuels. It’s why we value our long-term relationship with COSCO Shipping Lines and OOCL and are strongly aligned with their vision in accelerating towards net-zero emissions shipping.” - Roger Holm, President of Wärtsilä Marine and Executive Vice President at Wärtsilä Corporation. How to make a ship perform better? Computational fluid dynamics CFD has been a game-changer for optimising vessel performance. CFD can be used to calculate and analyse the interaction between a ship’s hull and its propulsors. This process can then determine the optimal combination – for newbuilds and existing vessels alike. Optimising the interaction is far more effective than optimising individual components. Thrusters are one great example of this. The thrust performance of tilted thrusters is no different with the 8-degree angle of the propeller shaft, but their interaction with the ship is dramatically different. This small change had a huge impact on overall ship efficiency. Tilted thrusters can deliver up to 20% higher effective thrust. CFD is an advanced simulation technology that helps optimise the ship. The result: the ship will use less fuel and generate less emissions. Its operating costs will be lower. And for the ship owner, this will bring the maximum possible benefit. 🌊 #CFDmethodology #OptiDesign

Reliable, safe, efficient. These are what operators and owners need their ships to be.    And how to get ahead of the competition?    With thrusters that have excellent dynamic positioning, station keeping, manoeuvring capabilities, and high thrust performance.     Like the new WST-18E embedded electric steerable thruster. It has a small footprint and fits into height limited spaces. In addition to all its great qualities, it is also extremely energy efficient and environmentally friendly.     Learn more 👉 https://wartsi.ly/3U4SzIK
