Upgrade package - power limitation for 4-stroke engines

Are your vessels prepared for EEXI?

By December 2023 all existing merchant, cruise and ferry vessels, above 400 GT* and which engage in international trade, must comply with the requirements of the IMO’s Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI), which defines a minimum energy efficiency level for vessels.
*falling under MARPOL Annex VI

The Wärtsilä 4-stroke Engine Power Limitation is an upgrade package for vessels with a single main engine per shaft-line with a fixed pitch propeller (FFP) but without PTO/PTI, which will enable compliance with the new requirements. The solution can be installed as an add-on to Wärtsilä 4-stroke engines and has been designed in collaboration with one of the major classification societies.

Key benefits

  • Ensure compliance with EEXI requirements
  • A standardised and cost-effective solution
  • Integrate with existing Wärtsilä 4-stroke engines

Wärtsilä 4-Stroke Engine Power Limitation

How it works

  • The speed/load controller measures the instant power delivered by the engine
  • A software upgrade limits the actuator position when the engine power reaches the EPL set point
  • The system can be overridden by the ship's master or officer of the watch with a key switch on the bridge
  • The EPL status is continuously monitored by a dedicated data logging system embedded in the EPL cabinet

Scope of supply

  • Control cabinet with data collection and storage functionality
  • Override switch for bridge
  • EPL documentation
  • Class plan approval during project executionInstallation, commissioning and verification
