An innovative and reliable system that enables the use of LPG as fuel

The LPG Fuel Supply System (LFSS) is an innovative and reliable system that enables the use of LPG as fuel and therefore increases operational efficiency and support environmental sustainability to the market. The use of LPG as marine fuel is likely to increase in the future, and might be another step towards a greener society. The Wärtsilä LFSS is designed to be robust and reliable, even under the difficult maritime conditions.

    Technical data

The system is configured with LPG storage tank(s) optimized for the trade of the vessel. The LPG fuel tank(s) is loaded through dedicated bunkering lines, or in case of a LPG carrier reloaded from the cargo tanks. From the fuel tank(s), the LPG is conditioned and prepared as fuel. A system consisting of pumps and heat exchanger is used to supply the engine with a stable and reliable fuel flow, at the correct pressure and temperature. The LFSS is equipped with proven components, including the necessary return gas conditioning system. Due to need for high cleanness on the fuel there are installed proper filtering upstream and embedded in the system.

    • The components are high quality parts, selected to ensure a high reliability.
    • Both low and high pressure pumps are fitted with standby units; 2x100% pumping capacity.
    • Pump design according to API-610 ensures long MTBR
    • Duplex filter installed to remove particles larger than 10 microns in size from the fuel gas
    • Unique Catch tank design is minimizing the fuel gas release to atmosphere, ensuring emission reduction  and supporting our sustainability approach
    • Ease of installation for all type of vessels
    • Suitable for both newbuilds and retrofits
    • Compact design allows small footprint and low weight

    Applications

LFSS are installed on VLGC`s and MGC`s, ie. ships mainly carrying LPG but also able to trade with Ammonia as cargo. The LFSS are installed both on new-buildings and as retrofits onboard (5 – 10) years old gas carriers.

    Key benefits

    • Lower fuel costs by using already present LPG (in case of LPG carrier)
    • Increased voyage efficiencies, less bunkering time (in case of LPG carrier)
    • Reducing air emissions (CO2, Sox, NOx and particles)
    • LPG has a high energy density
    • Easy to store
    • Reliable distribution network worldwide
    • Non Toxic
    • Less CO2 emissions, compared to traditional fuel
    • High NOx emission reduction
    • Almost zero SOx emission
    • No particles in the exhaust gas
